HP77X Series

This 1:1 Two-part, high-solids epoxy primer is an ideal coat under high-gloss urethane topcoats to maximize adhesion, improve gloss, and aid in gloss retention. We say improves gloss and aides in gloss as epoxies once topcoated too soon tends to cause dye back issues.

This epoxy will not have those issues. Dries quickly for faster overcoating, easy to sand once cured, (in as little as 3 hours above 70) and provides excellent corrosion control.
The Surfacing primer formula is ideal for easy sanding, very high build uses on all substrates. Ideal for a underwater marine primer, but not solely intended for marine use. This epoxy can be used on ANY substrate. The 770 series epoxy unlike our HP660 series epoxy is solely Direct to rust! 3 coats of this epoxy is all the protection you need against rust!

Our 660 series epoxy was always a “sealer” coat epoxy. Never intended for build, you always needed to use our 53xx primer over it (at least 12 hours later) for the build and sandable properties. You no longer need to do that with this unique epoxy.

You now have a new option!

If you want a high build, quick sanding, non shrinking epoxy. Consider the 770 series epoxy

Q&A

Q: What is Induction time?

A: The time necessary for the High Build Epoxy & High Build Epoxy Hardener to properly mix before spraying. It is required. This is not optional.

Q: Can High Build Epoxy replace using HP66X Series Epoxy & DTM High Build Primer??

A: Yes!!

Q: Is it also direct to rust? It has rust inhibitors like your DTM/DTA/Monocoat right?

A: Yes!!

Q: What Tip size do I need?

A: 2.2 is the minimum you can use. Tamco Recommends 2.2 - 2.5

Q: Why is the hardener not clear?

A: It's a unique product, it's how it's designed and made. Make sure both part A & B are shaken or use a drill.

Q: What is the difference between the HP 77X Series high build epoxy primer and the regular HP66X Series epoxy primer?

A: The 77X series epoxy is a true old fashion epoxy primer, it is not like our DTA epoxy primer sealer. HP77X builds very high. It is actually a navy formula, it is made and still used by the US Navy in the Coast Guard for high build waterproof epoxy. HP77X will never shrink & it sands as easy as our DTM High Build Primer. You can sand HP77X in about 4 to 5 hours at 80°. One thing that this product must have is an induction time. Unlike our DTA Epoxy, which does not need an induction time. HP77X Series must be shaken thoroughly and then allowed to sit for at least 45 minutes before applying.

Q: Can this product also be used on aircraft, I do alot of aircraft and looking for epoxy like this.

A: The best primer to use on an airplane is our DTA Epoxy. It is the same resin product that is used by Boeing.

Q: I sprayed 77X High build primer, however the only thing i realize i didn’t do was let the mix sit for 30 - 45 minutes before spraying. Would that cause my sandpaper to rock up when blocking? It’s been sitting for almost 24 Hours!!

A: Yes & the induction time was no followed. HP77X Series takes 10 times longer to cure without it. We have seen it stay gummy for over week.

Good product, but...

I make bicycles and paint what I build. I have used PPG products for 30 years, including DP epoxy primer and most recently KX sandable. PPG has really jacked their prices and they don't sell KX in any size smaller than a gallon - $500.00 plus. I started using Tamco's European clear and liked it so I decided to try your primers. I had some adventure with the HP663. Once I got all the runs worked out I shot the sandable - HP 771 and 770C mixed. I tried shooting it with my primer gun. Painting bicycles you need a small, agile gun. I use HVLP detail guns - a Sata Minijet for paint and a Harbor Freight for primers, and shoot at 20 PSI..

I leaRned my lesson on the white epoxy aND OPENED BOTH CANS TO STIR THEM UP. tHE HARDENER HAD SETTLED INTO A FUNDGe-like substance filling the bottom third of the can. It was work and I got a lot of it on me and on my workbench.
When I tried to shoot it, the sandable primer immediately clogged the gun so only a tiny bit was coming out. I turned the pressure up to 40 PSI and even so it took me 20 minutes to shoot a small frame and fork. I dumped the leftover primer and ran some solvent through the gun - it would barely get through. The coat I laid down was thick and warty-looking. It stayed tacky all into the evening. The next morning it had set up OK. The day after I sanded it. 100-grit regular sandpaper takes it down pretty well and then I finished it off with 200-grit wet-or-dry. It does sand nicely.
This could be an OK product if you included some decent thinner in the kit. As it is, I would say "not ready for prime time."
